Originally introduced from China, mosquito net fabric has been woven in Nara, Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868). While once used exclusively by aristocrats, it became popular among the general public, especially in summer. Traditional mosquito net sellers in Edo (modern Tokyo) were known for their signature calls of "kayaa, kayaa!"—a nostalgic sound of early summer.
