Weave stunning cords and bracelets with ease using this traditional Japanese kumihimo braiding disk.

Kumihimo (組み紐) means “gathered threads” and refers to the ancient Japanese art of braid-making. This round foam disk is a modern, portable version of the traditional marudai (braiding stand), designed to help you create intricate braided cords—perfect for making misanga, the Japanese-style friendship bracelets often given as charms of good luck and protection.

The disk features 32 numbered slots around the edge and a center hole to anchor your braid. Each slot helps keep your threads organized, making it easy to follow patterns and maintain consistent tension while braiding.

What’s Included:

  • Kumihimo braiding disk (round, with 32 notches)

  • Braided silk thread

  • Instruction booklet in Japanese, with clear visual diagrams but has clear diagrams and step-by-step instructions! We use a translation app (Google Translate) on our phones to help extract additional meaning from the translated words. There's a tutorial for this here!

What You’ll Need:

  • At least 7 embroidery threads or floss (you can use up to 16 for more intricate patterns)

  • Scissors

How It Works: Place your threads evenly in the slots around the disk and follow a simple pattern of movement—typically moving threads across the disk in a set sequence. Over time, you’ll see a beautiful spiral braid emerge through the center.

🎨 Customize your design with different thread colors, bead additions, or button closures for a personalized touch.

Details:

  • Dimensions: 4" diameter x 0.27" thick (10 cm x 7 mm)

  • Made in Japan

Why You’ll Love It:

✔ Portable and beginner-friendly

✔ Great for making friendship bracelets, decorative cords, keychains, and more
